About Top Young Historians
Note from the Editor:
The Top Young Historians feature was inaugurated in November 2005 on the History News Network (HNN) and ran on the website through 2010 and included more than 110 profiles. It was meant as a series to introduce up and coming and influential historians in the profession under the age of 45 in all fields of history.
Initially chairs of history departments at the most prominent universities in the United States were contacted to recommend and nominate historians for the list. Additionally, many doyens in the profession were contacted as well to make recommendations. After the series was launched, nominations were solicited and received, and those were considered for inclusion.
There were certain requirements necessary in choosing historians for the list; publications, teaching/professional experience, awards, presence in the media, and being in general buzz worthy. Each historian was reviewed to see if they possessed the criteria necessary for inclusion on the list. The same way the College Admission Officer decides the fate of each application and can push through a candidate per their discretion, as the editor of the Top Young Historians series, I had the ultimate authority in the decision making process for final list inclusion.

Having completed profiling the first 100 historians in our series in 2009, we are now relaunching the series to profile another 100 fascinating and dynamic Top Young Historians making their mark on the profession.
This page features profiles of interesting historians who are making their mark on the profession. All historians are nominated and undergo a review process before they are chosen. Each historian on this list has made outstanding contributions to the discipline in their area of research through their commitment and achievement in scholarship and teaching. They are also highly regarded outside academia for their expertise, and many are consulted by the popular media.
We are trying to represent all fields within history. We are currently looking for new nominations, and appreciate any suggestions; they can be submitted to Bonnie Goodman for consideration. Click here to send your nominations. (All nominations and suggestions will be given serious consideration.)
